Artist's Description

A petroglyph of a fully-laden pack mule, probably dating back to the time of the Coronado expedition which passed through southern Arizona in 1540 in search of riches rumored to be in the "Seven Cities of Cibola." Though the cities and riches turned out to be mythical, Coronado's expedition blazed a trail for Spanish settlement and missions to follow. The pack mule petroglyph sits atop a boulder-strewn hill in the Ironwood Forest National Monument west of Tucson, beneath the snag of a giant Ironwood tree.
